What is a Chemical Peel?

A Chemical Peel is a medical-grade facial in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove damaged skin cells, treat wrinkles and correct scars and sunspot discolourations.

Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels come in many different strengths and acidic formulations ranging from superficial to higher penetrating peels.

 

Some common acids in chemical peels are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), and trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

 

AHAs are often used to treat signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and uneven texture. BHAs are often used to treat problematic skin concerns such as blemishes, large pores and uneven texture.

 

TCA is often used to treat more advanced visible signs of aging and discoloration caused by sun damage, acne, or hormones.

Salicylic Acid Peel

A BHA derived from the bark of the willow tree and typically used to combat acne.

 

Salicylic Acid Peel is effective in treating acne-prone skin with prominent blackheads and whiteheads. It promotes the shedding dead skin cells, and penetrates comedones and pores to prevent clogging and neutralises acne-causing bacteria.

 

It also has anti-inflammatory benefits.

Glycolic Acid Peel

An AHA derived from fruit. Glycolic acid peels are used for superficial or medium depth peeling.

 

Glycolic acid possesses bactericidal effects on the acne-causing Propionibacterium acnes. In addition, glycolic acid peels can also improve skin texture, lighten mild pigmentation, minimise fine lines, and are also anti-inflammatory.
