Females tend to experience hair loss differently compared to men. While most men start to lose their hair from the crown and the front of the scalp, women tend to experience hair loss evenly throughout the entire crown.
Hair loss in women is common, especially as you age. Up to two-thirds of women experience hair loss after menopause. Less than half of women will make it past the age of 65 with a full head of hair.
Unlike hair loss in men, which is usually due to an excessive activity of testosterone on the hair follicles, hair loss in women is more complicated and could be due to many possibilities.
Here are some of the causes of Female Pattern Baldness;
1. Hormone Imbalances
Thyroid problems, or imbalances between male and female hormones can cause hair loss in women.
2. Recent stressful events
Recent lifestyle changes and events can cause stress to the body and result in hair loss. A common scenario would be recent pregnancy and childbirth.
3. Medications
Medications such as, antidepressants and blood thinners can cause hair loss. However, we do not recommend you to stop these medications unnecessarily.
4. Nutritional Deficiencies
A lack of iron, Vitamin B and Folate are also one of the common causes.
5. Autoimmune Disorders
In autoimmune disorders, the body's immune system attacks itself which can also cause a loss of hair.
6. Genetic
A family history of early balding also predisposes to hair loss.
However, here at Astute Medical Aesthetics, in order to determine the cause of your hair loss to help better serve you, our doctors will conduct a blood test to rule out serious medical problems.
